This past week has been a rough one. With the loss of a student, almost losing another, and Natalie's computer going kaput, its been a stressful one. Yesterday however was a pretty good end to such a tough week. As usual, we had to fly to Provo (just across the lake) to get fuel due to politics with the owner of the fuel pump in Spanish Fork (a story for another day). Everything proceeded as it always does as we entered Provo airspace. We were cleared to land in our usual spot by the tower, and we came in the usual way. As we got closer however, I noticed a big, olive drab green, helicopter sitting where we usually set down. It was a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter! I was very surprised to see it there and directed my student to land in a different place so we weren't in the way when the chopper was ready to go.
We landed and got out to take pictures and stare in awe while we waited for the fuel truck to come. The pilots came out of Millionair (a place where a pilot can get whatever he needs from fuel to charts to even a place to crash (no pun intended) for a while) and began their start up.
We watched for a bit, then got in somewhat embarrassed for flying an R-22, and prepared for departure. The Blackhawk took off in front of us, then as we got cleared for takeoff, a P-51 Mustang flew by. What magnificent aircraft!!
Wow!
